Update your work wardrobe without buying a thing

Twenty Ten Talent - update your wardrobe

If your work wardrobe is stuck in a rut and your bank balance can’t handle a blowout shopping spree don’t despair. You can still shake things up and reinvent your look without buying a thing. Here’s how to get the most out of what you already own and get creative with your signature style.

1. Mix and match
It’s easy to fall back on tried and tested combinations. If you find yourself always pairing your favorite skirt with the same jacket and the same purse now’s the time to take a step back. Get creative and mix and match your favorite pieces in new ways.

If you’re looking for inspiration pick up a magazine or browse through your favorite fashion blogs to get styling ideas. More often than not you will have something super similar already in your wardrobe, or browsing will ignite an idea to pair something new.

2. Reorganize
Set aside an afternoon to go through your wardrobe. Organize your clothes in a way that makes sense for you, either by color blocks, or style of garment. It makes it much easier to find and select outfits and chances are you’ll stumble across an item you haven’t seen in ages and can’t wait to wear again.

3. Repair and dry clean
If you have a pile of clothing that needs to be repaired or dry cleaned, just do it. You’ll immediately have new options to add back to your wardrobe. Investing in the clothes you have is much more economical than buying something new for the sake of it.

4. Organize a clothes swap
Pull out items that you haven’t worn in over 18 months and make a decision. If there are special occasion items then carefully store them away. However, if your unworn items include regular work attire you’ve fallen out of love with, now’s the time to find them a new home.

Get your girlfriends over for an evening and host an informal clothes swap. Not only are you likely to score a few new items, you also get to declutter your own closet. Anything left over can be donated to Goodwill, the Salvation Army or to organizations like Dress for Success who seeking donations of professional attire to provide to disadvantaged women.

5. Plan ahead
You are likely to end up wearing the same thing over and over if you’re making the decision about what to wear in a hurry. Instead, take time at the weekend to look at your week ahead and plan your outfits for that important meeting or for the networking event. Updating your look can be a lot of fun when you have time to mix, match and accessorize versus when you’re rushing to get out the door.

It’s easy to forget you can easily rework your existing wardrobe to create striking new combinations. Get creative and before you know it you’ll be getting much more mileage out of the clothing and accessories you already own.
