So, we’re one month into 2016 and have already made, and broken, our new year resolutions. That’s okay, as the year is still getting started and there are plenty of ways to keep up the momentum.
If you’re looking to advance your career, here are 5 steps you can take to make sure 2016 is your best year yet.
1. Create your own opportunities
Find ways to do what you do best and be proactive in suggesting how you can add value to projects or programs that are important to your company. If opportunities in your current role are scarce find extracurricular opportunities that can work for you, outside of where you work or by volunteering or contributing to an external organization.
2. Learn a new skill
This could be work related or something personal. The most important thing is to identify something you’re really excited to try. Learning something new is a great way to boost your confidence when you realize just what you can accomplish.
3. Don’t be afraid
When you’re a kid you quickly realize you’re not going to figure out anything without trying and failing a bunch of times. From learning to crawl, walk, or ride a bike it’s all the same, you’ve got to try, and keep trying, until you finally get it.
As we get older we become more and more afraid of putting a foot wrong. This often means we won’t even try something. If there’s something you want to do, don’t worry about getting it wrong, just go for it!
4. Be with the best
And by best, I mean positive, happy people. Research shows positive, optimistic people are happier and healthier, and enjoy more success than those who think negatively. Surrounding yourself with people who have a positive energy will help propel you forwards.
5. Look after your health and well-being
This is more than just starting a new diet or hitting the gym again as soon as January rolls around. It’s about taking care of you from top to bottom all year long. None of us are perfect, but making sure you do your best to get enough sleep, eat right, exercise, and protect yourself from unnecessary stress is essential to creating the strongest foundation to achieve your goals.
