How to achieve big goals with small shifts

Goals are a powerful thing, so we are told. If you want to be successful you have to have goals, according to the mantra of every motivational speaker.

I’m going to tell you something that is simple, but can be transforming all at the same time. It is not just about the goals we write, it is the size, shape and form of our goal that will provide success or frustration.

Size
The size of our goals can be exciting and attractive before it slides into inconceivable and overwhelming. But that’s okay. We just need to take a step back and look with awe at our BIG GOAL and then start to break it all the way down to a series of little goals. Some nice bite sized chunks.

We are not trying to get from 0 – 80 in 10 seconds. Between 0 and 80 are some important steps and learning to make sure we don’t flash and burn but sustain and keep pushing those boundaries.

Small shifts is what we are after. Small shifts physically and, most importantly, mentally. What we conceive and believe we can achieve, but your mind and spirit need to really believe in the change you want to make. Small shifts will eventually get you to your Big Goal.

Shape
Does the shape of your goal fit you or is it really for someone or something else so isn’t a comfortable fit? To make your goal happen it needs to be for you, connected to you. What is your motivation for your goal? Really think about the “why” of your goal this helps give clarity, increases your motivation and helps you identify the heart of your goal which you may discover isn’t what you think. We need to be clear on the shape of our goal and make sure that it is our personal fit.

Form
How have you formed your goal? Is it doomed from the start? Was it made to fail and how do you know what kind of goal you have made? It all comes down to the form your goal takes and to help us is this handy little tool called SMART.

The S stands for Specific. “My goal is to travel” is quite different from “my goal is to travel to Accra in Ghana within 6 months.” Which one feels like it is more likely to happen for you? Why? Could it be because you have stated a place and a time period so it suddenly feels more real? Revisit your goals and see how specific they actually are.

M is for Measurable, how will you know when your goal has been achieved to your satisfaction? Turn your goal into a journey that you can clearly observe your progress, plan towards and no doubt create subsidiary goals to help accomplish this one.

A because you want your goal to be Achievable. All little goals can come together to help you achieve your bigger goal while building your confidence and motivation with each win.

R is because you have to be Relevant or Realistic with your goals. Setting unrealistic goals can make you feel unmotivated and like you failed when you didn’t give yourself a chance from the start.

And finally T is for Time bound. Help give your goal form by setting a time period around it. Remember this is not carved in stone and can be changed.

Your goals are yours, made for you by you. Let them be a joyful resource to help you accomplish your dreams.
